Money Saving Interior Design Ideas

A person looking to redesign the interior of his or her home on a fixed or a tight budget needs to plan very carefully. There are lots of tips and ideas to achieve great results without breaking the bank. Here are some of the most useful ideas.

 Color

A fresh coat of paint is the quickest and perhaps the cheapest way to give the room a whole new look. Choose a color that is different from the last one so that the change is instantly recognizable; however, if the soft furnishings match the color scheme of the walls, make sure that the new color is also complementary to avoid extra expense being incurred. Lighter colors will really brighten a room and make the whole home feel fresher. Choosing neutral shades is also recommended, as they tend to blend in easily with the rest of the home’s decor.

For those who have the time and the patience, crocheting throws to cover up worn seating is a cheap and very effective way to make a change. Inexpensive throws can also be purchased in a wide range of colors and patterns and have the advantage of being washable (with care) and are quick and easy to change. This is a cheaper option than having the seating re-upholstered or replacing it completely. Cushion covers can also be made in the same colors and patterns to match the new throws, or contrasting colors will really stand out and make a statement. Other DIY projects could include making curtains or blinds.

 Furniture

There is no need to replace furniture, as much of it can be recycled. Old dining tables and chairs can be painted to look almost as good as new, and painting them a different color will give the impression that they are completely different items. Save space and money by buying extending dining tables, which can be closed for general use and extended when entertaining guests. There is no need to have two pieces of furniture when one piece is dual-purpose.

 Finishing touches

Simple pot plants can lift the look of a room and add a touch of brightness.

Add dimmer switches instead of buying extra lamps to create a soft lighting effect.

Check under the carpet to see what state the floorboards are in. Real wood flooring can be expensive if fitted from scratch, but if the floorboards are of good quality then it is simply a case of sanding them down and varnishing them to achieve a pleasing and durable finish. Some soft rugs can then be laid to add a touch of luxury.

It is really easy to get carried away and go over budget when shopping for items for the home, and it is therefore essential to have a plan and stick to it. If there is a particular theme in mind, such as vintage or shabby chic, search for some real bargains in such items.

These are just a few simple ideas and tips to save money on interior design, and if followed will assist in creating a great result at minimum cost.

  1. Painting is a great way to change the look of a room! When we moved into our new home, I painted a few rooms right away. The others I left to see if their existing colors would “grow” on me – and they most of them did. I’m happy that I waited, because painting the entire house would have been so much work.

  2. Great ideas! Some of our rooms have good original wood flooring under the carpet, so we’re hoping to sand them down and avoid spending a fortune on new floor coverings.

  3. I’m a big advocate for re-painting to add a fresh touch to a place. I rent, and can’t re-paint here, but I’m changing up my drapes and throw cushions.

  4. Expandable dining tables are gaining more popularity these days. The major advantage of using the expandable dining tables is the fact that the dining table could be expanded to a certain length when required. This is particularly useful when there are large number of guest in your home. The expandable dining tables can be increased in size by adding two leaves and also it could be brought back to the original shape and size easily..^
