It is funny that I should be writing about procrastination, as I am the worst procrastinator I know. Possibly the worst in existence. This is actually why I chose to read and review “How to Stop Procrastinating” by Trevor Johnson. I figure that if it can help me, it can help anybody.
I’m generally not a fan of self-help books. The ones I have seen just made me smack my palm to my forehead, thinking “Well, duh….!” In this case however, I was extremely curious to see if I would read anything useful. Procrastination is a problem that plagues me every day and has caused lifelong problems. It is the reason I didn’t start my blog much earlier, and why it may take a while to be successful. So I read the book in a skeptical yet hopeful state of mind.
The book shares 7 techniques for putting an end to procrastination, and it is an easy read; not very long, and it kept my attention. Each section starts out with a famous quote, and while some were funny, they all made me think. While reading, I decided to try out some of the techniques immediately.
One section in particular suggested making a timetable list of how I spend my day, filling it in as I go along. This was an eye-opener, to say the least. You think “I’m living it, of course I know how I spend my time,” but when you actually write it down, you see just how much time you’re wasting on unimportant matters.
After implementing all of the techniques, I found that I was actually getting a lot more stuff done during the day. Instead of putting off those emails and the dishes until after I was done browsing the internet, I was doing the big, important projects right away. Not only did this save time, but it made my mood better as well. Instead of feeling guilty all day for not doing what I should be doing, I started the day with a sense of accomplishment.
I am very happy to have found this book. I have it saved on my computer desktop, so I can read it whenever I’m feeling lazy. My problem will be sticking with the changes. Hopefully, I will start doing some of these things automatically without having to read the book every time.
